Flappy Bird Creator Denies Ties to Re-Release Amid Crypto Rumors

  • Dong Nguyen denies any connection to the Flappy Bird re-release or crypto involvement.
  • The updated version may have crypto components, although Nguyen has denied its support.

Dong Nguyen, the designer of Flappy Bird, has publicly denied any affiliation to a group seeking to re-release the renowned mobile game and stated that he does not support cryptocurrency. Nguyen tweeted on X (previously Twitter) on September 15 to emphasize that he had not sold the game or any connected assets.

This response came just two days after the Flappy Bird Foundation revealed plans to relaunch the game. The group claimed to have obtained the rights to Flappy Bird from Gametech Holdings LLC, a company that contested Nguyen’s trademark application last year but was granted the rights to the game in January.

Rumors of Crypto Integration in New Release

Varun Biniwale spotted a hidden webpage from the group, implying that the new version of Flappy Bird may incorporate bitcoin functionality. The page suggested that the next games might employ blockchain platforms such as Solana and feature a “play-to-earn” model in which gamers earn bitcoin while playing.

While Nguyen has distanced himself from the relaunched game, secret website pages imply it may have cryptocurrency-related components. Varun Biniwale identified references to a “$FLAP token” on Solana, indicating that the relaunched game promotes “play-to-earn” and “stake-to-own” models. Furthermore, a now-defunct page hinted at prospective airdrops and ties to the TON Blockchain.

Nguyen, who removed Flappy Bird from app stores in 2014 owing to its tremendous popularity and addictive nature, stated that he has no affiliation to the reborn game and does not support any cryptocurrency-related ventures. The game’s abrupt reappearance, combined with potential blockchain links, has sparked questions about the motivations behind its rebirth.

The project is purportedly being led by Michael Roberts of 1208 Production, but he has yet to respond to calls for comment. Despite these developments, Nguyen continues to distance himself from the project, stating unequivocally that he has no involvement or support for any cryptocurrency-related projects.

With Nguyen’s strong criticism and concerns about the new release’s integrity, the fate of Flappy Bird’s return remains uncertain.
