PFE Stock Rebounds, Pfizer Covid Vaccine Safe for Kids, Covid Is Officially America’s Deadliest Pandemic

On Monday, the US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc (NYSE: PFE) shared the results of its COVID-19 trial vaccine in kids aged between 5 and 11. According to Pfizer, the Covid vaccine it has been working on together with German BioNTech SE (NASDAQ: BNTX) is safe and generates a “robust” immune response in kids.

The pharma companies’ trials included more than 2,200 children. They were given two shots of a 10-microgram dose of the vaccine, a third the dose size given to people 12 and older.

The companies will submit the data received to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health regulators “as soon as possible.” However, it is unclear how much time the authorities will need to review the data and approve the vaccine.

Scott Gottlieb, a Pfizer board member and the former head of the FDA, commented:

“Depending on how long the FDA takes to review the application, whether it’s a four-week review or a six-week review, you could have a vaccine available to children as early as probably by the end of October or early November.”

So far, Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid vaccine has been approved for people of at least 12 years old. The common side effects of using the vaccine for teens and adults include fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever, and nausea.

Notably, the approval by FDA could help Pfizer stock rebound after showing signs of weakness. Over the last month, Pfizer shares declined by 8.64%, with being down 4% in the last five trading days. On Monday, PFE stock closed slightly up, adding 0.71% to $44.20. After hours, Pfizer shares lost 0.09% to $44.16. Its market cap is $246.08 billion. Year-to-date, Pfizer stock is 20.08% up.

COVID-19 Is America’s Deadliest Pandemic

The approval of the Pfizer vaccine for kids is an essential step to prevent the spread of the virus. Notably, the pandemic has become the deadliest outbreak in American history. It has even surpassed the estimated US fatal cases during the 1918 influenza pandemic. So far, the total deaths because of coronavirus made up more than 675,000 on Monday. This number is rising at an average of more than 1,900 fatalities per day.

Notably, reported US deaths because of Covid make up roughly 14% of the nearly 4.7 million fatalities worldwide. Meanwhile, the country’s population comprises only about 4.2% of the global population.

For comparison, the 1918 influenza pandemic killed 50 million victims globally at a time when the world had one-quarter the population it does now. Global deaths from COVID-19 now stand at 4.7 million. But for the US, fatal coronavirus cases are at a much higher level than in 1918.

Howard Markel, director of the Center for the History of Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, said:

“In terms of raw numbers of deaths, that’s a high number. And it’s higher still than it should have been, frankly.”

The good thing is that today, in the 21st century, medicine is on a totally different level, and we have much more opportunities to deal with the disease. There is already a number of COVID-19 vaccines approved worldwide. Besides, the coronavirus mutates at a slower pace than flu viruses, which makes it a more stable target for vaccination.
